Morel Mushrooms

Morels, of the Morchellaceae family of mushrooms, grow throughout the world, North America, South America, Europe, Russia, China, Turkey and India. Morels are a choice edible mushroom served at the best restaurants for their flavorful taste.

Morels grow in the spring on the ground in coniferous woods, especially spruce, as well as under cottonwood trees, near creeks, and in forests that have burned the previous year.

The best place to find morels and in large amounts, is in recent forest burns and logging areas; such soil disturbances trigger all kinds of mushroom growth, essential to the recovery of the forest floor, and the future life of the forest.

I fell in love with morels as soon as I started hunting them; I use the term hunting here because picking morels is a hunt in itself. Even though they can't run away, they are excellent at hiding and usually many miles have to be traveled to find them; looking for them and picking them is totally captivating and addictive. Morels have to be carefully harvested by cutting them off at the base with a knife in order not to disturb the forest floor. For some, finding a handful of morels is a treat; I fill the pick up on any good year.

I have been picking morels professionally for 5 years now, and I am totally hooked! When they come out in my front yard every spring, I know the season is starting and I have a good two months of picking, sometimes more, depending of how fast I burn out - it's quite a workout!

In the spring of 2005 I led a group to pick morels in Alaska , where millions of acres burned in the summer of 2004. I had never seen morels so big and in such large quantities.

Our story was captured in Aug. 2005 by the Independent, a Missoula, Montana weekly; read all about it at www.MissoulaNews.com.
